Trooper struck by truck on Northway discharged from hospital
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEW10) -- Trooper Nicholas Abbondola was discharged from Albany Medical Center on Tuesday after over three weeks of care, New York State Police announced. Abbondola was struck by a pick-up truck during a vehicle stop on the Northway in early November.
Trooper Abbondola, a Mahopac native, first joined the New York State Police in 2023. He graduated from the NYSP Academy one year later.
On November 2, Abbondola was on a routine patrol when he stopped a car on I-87 in Colonie, determining shortly therafter that the vehicle needed to be towed. While helping facilitate the work, Abbondola and the tow truck operator were both struck by an allegedly impaired driver.
Abbondola endured severe wounds to his legs and right arm, in addition to various fractures and injuries throughout his body. State police stated the tow truck operator was discharged from the hospital within 24 hours of the collision after being treated for his injuries and is doing well.
Abbondola was supported and applauded by his fellow members of law enforcement as he left Albany Medical Center. State police said he will continue his recovery at a rehabilitation center following Tuesday’s discharge.
"We ask for your continued prayers and support for Nick's recovery. We eagerly await the day he can rejoin us, wearing his purple tie with pride," said Trooper Stephanie O’Neil. "Until then, we stand united, carrying him through these difficult times."
