Students learn life skills serving turkey meal
LANSINGBURGH, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Before they headed off for Thanksgiving break, students at Knickerbacker Middle School served up a turkey meal for the faculty and staff.
“Our special ed students and our self-contained cohort host a Thanksgiving dinner for faculty, staff, admin, and the board of education, " said teacher Bethany Spencer, "and it's one of the most favorite traditions for both students and staff here in Lansingburgh."
The tradition is over 25 years strong. From decorating the placemats for the table settings, to prepping and serving the food, and welcoming the staff to their seats, the students took the assignment seriously while also having fun.
"It helps us get together as a family," said a student named Anthony.
“You see a lot of independence within them, and who really enjoys helping out," said teacher Kate Lozo.
The students not only learned practical life skills, but also how to help their community with a food drive.
"Students bring in canned goods, nonperishable items, and the staff brings in turkeys and hams to help out the families," said Varsity Football Coach Jeff Pasinella.
