New stop signs added on Maple Avenue in Sheffield, Mass.

SHEFFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10)-- Two new stop signs have been added to Maple Avenue, the Sheffield Police Department announced Monday. The signs will be placed near Boardman Street.

Police said the increased traffic is because of a temporary bridge closure on Kellogg Road but the traffic has raised concerns among the residents. "Concerns have been raised about the safety of the intersection; particularly truck traffic that has to take a wide turn coming off of Boardman Street," police stated in a Facebook announcement.

In a collaborative effort among the Sheffield Select Board, Sheffield Police Department and the Sheffield Highway Department, two signs have been added. Police said the hope is that traffic will slow down, resulting in a safer traffic pattern for the community.

On Nov. 4, the Select Board announced bridge construction updates. The estimated time for construction will be in 2027. At the same meeting, Administrator Rhonda LaBombard said the two solar-powered stop signs will be placed before the intersection of Boardman Street on Maple Avenue and County Road.

The new traffic pattern may require getting used to, the department stated. But they ask all drivers to follow all traffic laws, although there might be an inconvenience for frequent drivers.
