NYC family serves Thanksgiving meals: 'Three generations of generosity'
NEW YORK (PIX11)—This holiday season, with grocery store prices still sky-high, the stress on families' budgets is driving more and more people to local food pantries for help.
The day before Thanksgiving, a non-profit gives food and keeps holiday traditions alive with a home-cooked meal.
Theres three generations of generosity helping make it happen.
Sara Moss from Valley Stream says she started volunteering at the New York Common Pantry 30 years ago, which changed her life.
Moss is a former vice chairman of Estee Lauder.
She fell in love with volunteering and, for seven years, asked her family to join her. Now, seven members of her family have joined the serving line.
New York Common Pantry’s Executive director, Stephen Grimaldi, says the heart of his organization is volunteers like Moss.
Moss is now a board member.
New York Common Pantry feeds more than 12,000 families weekly with pantries from East Harlem to the Bronx.
According to the non-profit No Kid Hungry and its New York Hunger Survey 2024, the cost of food is rising faster than income in three out of four NYC households.
Their giving doesn’t stop.
Their food drive continues until the end of the year.
