Three savvy ways to keep your Christmas tree looking perfect over the festive season

0

THERE is something wonderful about the smell of a real Christmas tree in your home.

But if you opt for one, rather than an artificial version, you’ll want to ensure your fabulous fir doesn’t lose its needles and start to look a bit sad before the big day.

Here’s how to keep your pine looking perfect throughout the festive season.

PICK CAREFULLY: Find a tree that is as fresh as possible.

Forestry England recommends holding a branch with your thumb and forefinger and gently pulling towards you.

If lots of needles come off, the tree is not fresh.

You can also gauge its condition by crushing a few needles in your hand to see if they release a good scent.

Fresher trees will be more fragrant.

TRUNK TRIM: When you get your tree home, Forestry England recommends sawing just over a centimetre off the bottom of the trunk to get rid of any hardened sap.

Then pop it straight into a bucket of water so it can absorb some moisture, which will help it to stay fresh and green throughout festivities.

Choose a stand that can hold a good amount of liquid.

Your chosen tree should be kept in water the whole time, so you will need to make sure you can easily top it up.

Check each day there is enough water — you will likely be surprised by how thirsty trees can be.

Make sure the trunk is nicely submerged at all times.

KEEP IT COOL: Your tree’s natural habitat at this time of year is out in the cold air.

Minimise the shock of its new home and help to keep it happy by locating it away from radiators or other sources of heat.

Save your cash and avoid buying special tree food. A fresh supply of water is all that is needed.
