Spurs eyeing two Championship goalkeepers amid Vicario injury
Spurs have reportedly set their sights on two young Championship goalkeepers as they look to bolster their options between the sticks in January after that shocking Guglielmo Vicario injury.
Spurs might be forced to act in January
The news of Vicario‘s fracture deflated the high that many Spurs fans felt on the back of their side’s demolition of Manchester City on Saturday.
The Tottenham number one had delivered his best performance of the season at the Etihad Stadium, denying Erling Haaland several times, and quite astonishingly, he confessed later on Instagram that he had played more than an hour of that game with a fracture.
While Spurs do have an experienced backup in Fraser Forster, the concern would be if the Englishman picks up an injury or a red card, with neither Alfie Whiteman nor Brandon Austin having featured for the club so far.
Tottenham eyeing two Championship shot-stoppers
It has now been reported by talkSPORT that Spurs expected Vicario to be sidelined for several months and are thus now considering signing a goalkeeper in January.
The report says that two Championship players are on their wishlist, one of them being Burnley’s James Trafford, who is keen to make a Premier League return after the Clarets’ relegation last season.
Another is Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, who has been the Black Cats’ established number one since the 2021-22 season.
Tottenham were already planning to sign a goalkeeper
Interestingly, TEAMtalk have now relayed this report from talkSPORT and added that according to their sources, Spurs had already been on the lookout for a goalkeeper prior to Vicario’s injury.
That makes sense, considering that Forster’s current deal runs out next summer, with the North London club possibly on the lookout for the Italian’s understudy.
If that is the case, Spurs might just push forward their plans and pursue their top targets in January rather than next summer. However, getting goalkeepers out of their clubs will be much harder mid-season and the Lilywhites might have to pay a premium to do so.
