Ohio State, Columbus police gear up for 'The Game'

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- As the Buckeyes prepare to face off against the rival Wolverines, central Ohioans should prepare for heavy traffic.

"Arrive early and be patient," OSUPD Chief Dennis Jeffrey said.

The Ohio State University Police (OSUPD) and Columbus Police said to expect traffic to be slow moving. Although the departments are preparing for more, both police forces asked the public to be understanding.

"Traffic seems to be the biggest issue. You know, people get frustrated sometimes, you know, you're moving that many people in the stadium its going to take a while to get them in and out," Jeffrey said.

That’s not the only thing OSUPD, Columbus Police and surrounding suburbs are keeping an eye on.

"We get a lot of people who've consumed a little bit too much alcohol. We will have break-ins, crimes of opportunity when people leave valuables in visible areas in their vehicles and then traffic," CPD Zone 4 Commander Christine Nemchev said.

Police said to make sure you bring your valuables inside, have a plan to stay hydrated and get home safe.

"Noon games are a little bit easier. The pregame is not quite as long as it is for a night game, but still drink responsibly. Make sure you drink some water," Director of Emergency Management Robert Armstrong said.

Even though it’s a noon game, police said they will be carrying out their safety plan into the night.

"We just want folks to enjoy the game, but also regardless of the outcome, behave and act like good fans. That would be the number one thing," Jeffrey said.

You can sign up for traffic alerts from OSUPD, called Buckeye alerts, by going to the OSU athletics football page
