The surgeon who operated on Guglielmo Vicario this week has described the Tottenham man as a ‘lion-heart’ for playing on through his injury.
Guglielmo Vicario has unbelievable spirit and dedication
Vicario is expected to be out of action for a few months after fracturing his ankle, but what was unbelievable about the whole episode is the fact that the goalkeeper had played through a fracture.
The Italian revealed on social media that he had played more than 60 minutes against Manchester City with the fracture, which was bonkers for those who watched him throw himself around and make save after save against Erling Halland and his fellow attackers.
Ange Postecoglou lavished praise on the determination the 28-year-old showed to play through such an injury, describing him as “hard as nails.”
Vicario’s surgeon comments on the procedure
Sportface.it have now revealed that the Tottenham man was operated on in Pisa, Italy at the Casa di Cura San Rossore, with Professor Niek Van Dijk overseeing the procedure.
Van Dijk is described as a ‘world authority’ in the field of arthroscopy and ankle surgery and he was assisted by Doctor Giulia Favili, a specialist in foot and ankle surgery.
The professor is quoted in the outlet as saying about the Spurs man: “He demonstrated incredible willpower and extraordinary devotion to the team by finishing the match with a broken ankle.
“Guglielmo Vicario is a lion-heart, a strong and determined athlete, even if he is currently forced to rest. I cannot say anything else because it concerns the footballer’s privacy.”
Tottenham expected to enter the market for a goalkeeper
With Vicario expected to be sidelined for a significant period, Postecoglou has said that he has full faith in Fraser Forster to step up and deliver the goods over the coming weeks and months.
However, reports have indicated that Spurs are expected to enter the market for a goalkeeper in January.
The Lilywhites are thought to be on the lookout for a homegrown option who is good with the ball at his feet and can make good decisions under pressure (The Times).
