Tottenham offer two-year scholarship to ‘best U17 centre-back in England’
One Tottenham teenager, who is turning a lot of heads for the Under-18s this season, has now reportedly been offered a two-year scholarship by the club.
Are Tottenham on the cusp of a golden generation of youngsters?
The Tottenham academy does not have a great track record of producing players for the first team over the past two decades.
However, that might be about to change, with several talented academy graduates now on the cusp of the senior squad, including the likes of Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, and Alfie Devine.
Tottenham’s current Under-18s set-up is also full of some wonderful talents, and one of those is now set to be rewarded with a scholarship.
Junai Byfield offered a scholarship
The player in question is Junai Byfield, who despite being just 16 years of age, is already a regular for Tottenham’s Under-18 side.
The centre-back played every single game in the Under-18 Premier League this season and has won many admirers both within and outside the club.
Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news on the club’s youth set-up, has now revealed that the Lilywhites have offered the youngster a two-year scholarship to join the Under-18s.
Wenham added that Byfield is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in his age group and has already trained with the first team.
Youngsters will be encouraged by first-team developments
Ange Postecoglou has not been shy of handing opportunities to young players, with Moore and Lankshear both getting time this season.
That will encourage the talented youngsters in the academy, who will feel that there is a clear pathway to the senior side.
That has not always been the case with some Tottenham managers in the past, who have preferred experience over promoting youth.
