BURLINGAME — A man who pointed a loaded firearm at police was in stable condition Saturday after being shot by officers with the San Mateo and Burlingame police departments, authorities said.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave as the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office conducts its investigation, per protocol.
Officers from the San Mateo Police Department responded to a report at 2:53 a.m. on Nov. 30 of possible gunshots near the 800 block of North San Mateo Drive to see a man who pointed a firearm at police and ran. After calling for backup, officers pursued the suspect until a Burlingame police officer located him at Jefferson Court and Peninsula Avenue.
Both Burlingame and San Mateo police officers at the scene attempted to de-escalate the situation, but were unsuccessful. They then fired a “less-lethal rubber projectile” to get the suspect to drop his firearm, according to a press release. After that also proved unsuccessful, one Burlingame officer and one San Mateo officer fired at the suspect, who fell to the ground.
The officers provided him with medical aid and transported him to a local hospital. They identified his firearm as a .45-caliber Glock pistol. Authorities did not release the suspect’s name.
Officials said in the release that they are responding to the incident by following San Mateo County’s protocol for officer-involved incidents: three separate independent investigations into the force response, suspect’s crimes and to ensure that officers acted in accordance with policy The investigations are being conducted by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, San Mateo Police Department and San Mateo and Burlingame Police Departments.
The San Mateo Police Department is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 650-522-7700, or anonymously at 650-522-7676.
