‘Jasprit Bumrah is a joke’: Former England pacer’s BOLD take on the world No 1 bowler
New Delhi: Former English bowler Steven Finn praised Bumrah after a match-winning spell against Australia in the first Test match in Perth. Bumrah, who was captaining the side, bundled out Australia by taking 8 wickets and didn’t allow them to get back into the game. Jasprit Bumrah utilized the conditions well and took crucial wickets at key moments. Finn praised Jasprit Bumrah, quoting him as the best player in the world. India leading Australia in 5 test match series of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 by 1-0.
“Jaiswal scored that brilliant 161, but the player I loved watching and believe is the best in the world right now, without a doubt, is Jasprit Bumrah. He’s just—he’s unbelievable, honestly. You watch him bowl and think, ‘I’m glad I don’t have to strap on my pads,’” Finn said on TNT Sports while reviewing India’s performance alongside former England captain Alastair Cook.
During the analysis, Cook admitted he was surprised by India’s dominant performance against Australia in Perth, a venue that has traditionally been a stronghold for the hosts.
“I was surprised that India have gone there (Australia) and hammered Australia in what normally is a very hard place to go and play cricket. Perth, I know it’s not the WACA; I know it’s the new stadium, but still, historically, Australia don’t lose many games there. I thought India was so brave.”
Jasprit Bumrah’s unorthodox bowling action and exceptional skill set make him a “complete package,” according to Australia’s top batter, Steve Smith.
In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Bumrah led India and was named ‘Player of the Match’ after taking eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings, to guide the visitors to a dominant 295-run victory in the opening Test.
“From the start of his run-up, it’s just all awkward,” Smith told the Sydney Morning Herald. “The way he runs in is unlike anyone else, and the final part of his action is unique. I’ve faced him quite a bit now, and each time it takes a few balls to get used to his rhythm,” Smith said. He was one of Bumrah’s victims during a destructive opening spell in the first innings, where the pacer ripped through the Australian top order.
