“Should come in at No. 6”: Former selector believes Rohit Sharma should play at lower order for Adelaide Test
The new opening pair of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal broke a lot of records during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, held at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Both of the openers had a massive contribution in India’s 295 run victory against Australia. Rohit Sharma is usually one of the player who would open the inning for India, but since he was on a paternity leave, Rahul and Jaiswal got the chance to open the inning for India.
As of now, since Rohit Sharma has returned to the squad for the second Test, which is a day-night pink-ball Test, set to be held in Adelaide, there are big chances that this opening pair might change again.
A lot of former cricketers and experts are suggesting that Rohit Sharma should come down in the batting order and let the opening pair of Rahul and Jaiswal continue their explosive playstyle in the second Test as well. During the practice match against Australia’s PMXI, Rohit himself did not change the pair and came to bat at No.6 himself.
Former selector Devang Gandhi has suggested that Rohit Sharma should stick to the decision of playing at No. 6 and let Jaiswal and Rahul continue as the opening pair for Adelaide Test as well. He has even said that Rohit should keep on batting at No. 6.
“In fact, I feel Rohit should come in at No. 6, because Rishabh Pant, too, has shaped up very well at 5…The left-right combo, too, can be maintained that way,” said Devang.
“It becomes difficult if a middle-order batter tries to become an opener in the latter stages of his career. But it will not be difficult for an opener to go in the middle order, especially for Rohit, who started as a No. 6 batter for India,” he added.
The Indian captain has not played in the middle order since 2018. The last time Rohit batted at number six was during the 2018-19 tour of Australia where he scored 37, 1, 63*, and 5 in two games in Melbourne.
