Lakers reportedly among teams monitoring Day’ron Sharpe
With the Lakers searching for an answer to their backup center position, Nets big man Day’ron Sharpe might be the big they need.
Even before players like Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes were dealing with injuries, the Lakers had been looking for a quality big to add to this roster.
With the Brooklyn Nets reportedly “open for business” regarding trade talks, center Day’Ron Sharpe is a player Los Angeles is keeping an eye on, according to the most recent piece by Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.
“Teams gauging the trade market for a backup center are monitoring Day’Ron Sharpe, who’s expected to return soon from a hamstring injury for the Nets. With Noah Clowney out for at least a couple of weeks with a sprained ankle, it’s an opportunity for the 23-year-old Sharpe to jump back into the rotation immediately. Sharpe, who’s eligible for restricted free agency this summer, is being monitored by the Grizzlies, Clippers, Pelicans, Lakers, and Raptors, league sources told HoopsHype.”
Sharpe, at 23 years old, is still very young, having played just three seasons in the NBA for the Nets. He is currently averaging six points and 5.3 rebounds in Brooklyn this year.
Adding a big has been a goal for the Lakers since the summer. However, L.A. will have to ship at least one player to Brooklyn to get a deal done.
Moving Jalen Hood-Schifino works math-wise. The Nets have reportedly been one of the teams interested in the Lakers guard, so this could be a fair swap of young talent, with some potential assets attached.
While the Nets big isn’t the most intriguing player to trade for, he would be a young prospect about to enter restricted free agency with something to prove. It could become a situation where the Lakers bring in him and he can make an impact and improve his options for the summer.
Shrape isn’t the only big currently connected to the Lakers.
They are reportedly interested in Jonas Valančiūnas and also have Brook Lopez on their “internal board” as a trade target.
Last season, there was a lot of chatter during the trade deadline, but it came and went with zero action from the purple and gold.
Given the amount of smoke we’ve had this year, there will likely be some fire in the coming months.
