'Shame on you': Critics blast far-right lawmaker for demanding abolition of gay marriage

0

A far-right state lawmaker in Michigan called for the abolition of same-sex marriage on Monday immediately after returning from the holidays — and caught significant backlash on social media.

State Rep. Josh Schriver, who previously filed a lawsuit to restrict voting rights in Michigan and was stripped of his committee assignment after posting content promoting the white supremacist "great replacement theory," posted on X, "Make gay marriage illegal again. This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme."

He followed up with a second post reading, "20 years ago, Barack Obama was more conservative on marriage than many Republicans today. America only 'accepted' gay marriage after it was thrusted into her by a perverted Supreme Court ruling. America 2124 doesn’t have to be as dysfunctional as America 2024."

Commenters responding to his post were less than on board.

"A fellow representative is saying my marriage to the man I love should be illegal," wrote Michigan Democratic Party vice chair Jason Morgan. "This is definitely both controversial and extreme, along with anti-family. I grew up believing I'd never be able to get married and I'm not going back."

"Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else," wrote Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. "You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you."

"Make bigotry illegal. That solves the issue," wrote author Joyce Carol.

Schriver's remark also found its way onto the competing social media platform Bluesky, where it faced a similarly harsh reception.

"This is what he came back with after a week with his family and God — destroying other peoples’ families," wrote political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen, noting that his post just before that one vowed to turn off "all my devices for 7 days" and spend the holiday praying with family.

"Michigan Republican state Rep. Josh Schriver is giving away the game," wrote The Advocate reporter Christopher Wiggins.
