Pontypridd v Cross Keys – Matchday Preview

0

This Saturday 7th December Pontypridd RFC welcome Cross Keys RFC to Sardis Road, the Admiral Premiership match will kick-off at 2:30pm.

The two clubs have had some battle royales over the years in both Welsh Premiership league finals at Sardis and Welsh National Cup finals at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. For many years Keys competed for honours at the top end of the Welsh Premiership before their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2018/19 season.

The last time the two teams went head-to-head was on Wednesday 8th May 2019 at Pandy Park, and it was Ponty who claimed at 24-7 win. Dale Stuckey was amongst the scorers that evening with a brace of tries, that completed a ‘double-brace’ against the Keys that season after bagging two during the Valley Commandos’ home win against the Gwent outfit as well – Saturday 27th October 2017 was the last time Cross Keys visited Sardis Road with Ponty running out big winners by a 73-12 scoreline.

Try number one and try number two for Dale Stuckey against the Keys at Sardis Road on 27/10/2018.

Pontypridd extended their lead to four points at the top of the table following Saturday’s win away against second-placed Neath. The Valley Commandos dug deep to secure a 24-19 win at the Lextan Gnoll in what was an extremely physical encounter with neither team taking a backward step. Cross Keys returned to the Premiership this season after a five year absence after finishing third in last season’s Championship East, winning 15 out of their 22 matches. The Pandy Park men currently occupy 10th place in the standings, although the middle of the table is so congested that they are only five points behind Bargoed in 4th with a game in hand.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership table, accurate as of 2/12/2024.

As the competition enters the festive period the league is really taking in shape in terms of jeopardy for all teams from top to bottom. Cross Keys didn’t play on the weekend due to their ground being hit hard by the recent devastating floods in South Wales, but prior to that they enjoyed an excellent 22-21 win away at Bargoed, so Pontypridd can expect another significant battle on the pitch this weekend.
