‘Go by common sense…’: Sanjay Manjrekar shares opinion on India’s batting order for 2nd Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has joined the squad for the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The skipper missed the first Test because he welcomed his second child. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah captained the team.

The opening duo of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated the Australians in the second innings. Both of the players made a historic 201 run partnership, which is the highest first wicket partnership registered by an Indian pair.

Now since Rohit Sharma is back in the squad, the management is dealing with a question on whether to stick with the opening combination or push Rohit to his usual spot. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has advised the Indian team to go with the new opening pair in the upcoming second Test in Adelaide.

“Will we again go by stature and the incumbent senior iconic player? I think they will go by common sense and the current reality. Rohit Sharma himself would volunteer as captain. So, I think to make the most of what you’ve already gained from that second innings,” said Manjrekar.

If Indian team goes with the same opening duo as they used in Perth, then Rohit Sharma will have to come up at fifth position since Shubman Gill plays at the third place and has joined the squad.

“I think Gill considering his first Test match of the series, that number (No. 3) would actually ensure more success from Shubman Gill, a contribution. And Rohit Sharma as well it won’t be a massive difference from opening the innings and batting at No. 5,” Sanjay continued.

“So, No.3 would be a nice compromise. So, I think why we’re on this topic maybe Indian cricket also must reach a stage where they don’t give too much importance to batting positions like you have in T20 cricket that keeps swapping. So, whatever makes cricketing sense, and that always is something that maybe the Indian team management might think about,” he concluded.

The second Test match is going to be held from December 6 to December 10 at the Adelaide Oval in London, and this will be a pink-ball/day-night clash.
