Standing Tall: The Graceful Hollyhock
Photographer: Menashe DavidsonSummary Author: Menashe Davidson
Hollyhocks (Alcea spp.) are generally known for their tall spires of colorful flowers. Like most plants that have been domesticated from the wild, over time certain traits became favored or selected. This hollyhock plant is a permanent resident in our home-garden in Rishon LeZion, Israel. We've observed that Hollyhock stems possess a combination of traits that enable them to achieve impressive vertical growth and maintain stability even in windy conditions and without external support (bottom photo). This plant is approximately 10 ft (3 m) in height. Click here to see a video of this garden delight. Photos taken on April 27, 2024.
