Health risks of eating undercooked Meat: What you need to know

Written By: Zahra Rashidi

Although a vegetarian diet is highly effective in maintaining health, the consumption of some red and white meat, rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, is beneficial and essential for human health.

Nutrition experts recommend fully cooking meat before consumption and advise against eating it raw. Raw or undercooked meat can have various negative effects on health, leading to potential illnesses. This article explains the harmful effects of eating undercooked meat.

Doctors state that bacteria found in undercooked meat can lead to food poisoning, which, in severe cases, can be fatal. When meat is only partially cooked, it can cause various diseases such as appendicitis, intestinal inflammation, stomach and intestinal infections, liver diseases, diabetes, and even an increased risk of cancer.

Research shows that the human stomach is unable to properly digest raw meat. Meat that is not digested in the stomach can lead to the decomposition of albumin, a water-soluble protein, in the intestines, producing new toxins. Stomach worms, a major cause of infection, are often linked to the consumption of raw or undercooked meat.

There is a toxic substance called “casterel” found in meat, which, if consumed frequently, can lead to serious health issues. However, raw meat contains a higher concentration of this toxin, making even small amounts of raw meat potentially dangerous.

Meanwhile, people around the world consume raw meat as part of their diets in foods like sushi, steak tartare, carpaccio, and ceviche. Despite its popularity, the main question for many is whether a raw meat-based diet is safe.

Health organizations worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada, warn against the consumption of raw meat. They recommend cooking meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs to a safe internal temperature to eliminate any harmful pathogens that could cause food poisoning.

The tapeworm parasite, commonly found in raw meat, is one of the most prevalent types of infections. If the meat is not cooked or grilled properly, this parasite will remain alive. Once ingested, it can cause severe gastrointestinal infections. To eliminate this parasite, meat should be grilled over medium heat to ensure that the heat reaches all parts of the meat and it is cooked evenly.

Meanwhile, raw meat is commonly consumed in various dishes around the world, it is crucial to be aware of the health risks associated with it. Proper cooking is essential not only to improve digestion but also to avoid severe infections and potential long-term health issues. It is always advisable to follow the safety guidelines recommended by health authorities for cooking meat to reduce health risks.
