Witnesses report mother's alleged attempt to abandon her child at NW OKC gas station

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A mother was arrested after allegedly attempting to leave her child at a gas station while drunk.

According to court documents, witnesses said the mother grabbed her child by the arm and tossed him onto the ground at a gas station near W Memorial Road and N Macarthur Boulevard.

Neighbors shared their thoughts after hearing that 27-year-old Amber Adams was arrested on Saturday for child neglect.

"Brings pain to my heart," said Tremayne Smith, who lives nearby.

Witnesses told police that Adams seemed extremely drunk at a gas pump when she dropped off an 11-month-old and tried to drive away.

They called police who arrived to find another person in the car had stopped and retrieved the child before driving off.

Police caught up to the pair and Adams admitted to drinking wine and tequila, and taking drugs before getting behind the wheel.

She also gave conflicting reasons for trying to leave the child.

Smith lives nearby and has noticed the mother and her children at the playground.

"They're happy kids out there all the time playing. They all get along around here," said Smith.

Smith said he was surprised by the mother's actions and hopes everyone gets the help that they need.

"It's sad. I want the best for the kids. Always. Everybody has situations, but I want best for the kids, always. No pain, no hurt," said Smith.

There was also a 4-month-old child in the vehicle.

News 4 also learned Adams is currently on probation in Florida for a previous child neglect case.
