PTM leader urges Taliban to lift ban on women’s education in Afghanistan
The leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) has addressed the ban on women’s education in Afghanistan, stating that women’s education is essential for the country’s development and progress. He called on the Taliban to lift the ban on education for girls and women.
On Wednesday, the PTM leader took to his social media account, X urging the Taliban to create the necessary conditions for women’s education in Afghanistan. He emphasized that providing education is vital for the nation’s future.
On Monday, the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education, under the orders of Hibatullah Akhundzada, closed all higher education and semi-higher health institutions to female students across Afghanistan. The Taliban has not yet provided an official explanation for this new decree.
Previously, the Taliban had claimed that they would reopen educational institutions for girls. However, after three years, they have now closed the last remaining institutions for female students, which has sparked significant backlash.
This comes amid the Taliban has banned male doctors from treating female patients, and with the new decree, women are now severely restricted from accessing female doctors, particularly midwives and nurses. This move significantly hampers women’s healthcare options in the country.
German Foreign Minister has expressed concern that this decision could lead to the loss of many women’s lives. According to the United Nations, Afghanistan has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, particularly during childbirth.
The decision to ban education and restrict access to female healthcare professionals in Afghanistan highlights the ongoing challenges faced by women under Taliban rule.
These actions not only violate fundamental rights but also severely hinder the country’s progress. The international community continues to raise concerns about the humanitarian implications of such policies.
As the situation remains dire for Afghan women, it is crucial for both local and international actors to continue advocating for the rights of women and girls.
The global community must press for the Taliban to reverse these regressive policies and provide Afghan women with the opportunities they deserve for education and healthcare, which are essential for the future well-being and stability of the nation.
