Ange Postecoglou reveals whether Djed Spence could start for Tottenham soon
As Tottenham navigate a challenging Premier League season, questions about squad rotation and underused talents loom large—and Djed Spence finds himself at the heart of the discussion. In a recent press conference, the Spurs boss gives an insight into Spence’s role in the team.
The story behind Tottenham’s rollercoaster season
Tottenham Hotspur’s season under Ange Postecoglou has been anything but straightforward, with the team grappling with injuries and fluctuating performances.
Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League table, Spurs have secured six wins, two draws, and suffered five losses.
Their inconsistency has raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike, sparking debates about what changes could reinvigorate the squad.
Much of this inconsistency stems from a combination of key players being sidelined and others struggling to find form.
Despite early promise, the Postecoglou era has faced its fair share of challenges, and supporters are eager to see what the manager has up his sleeve to address these issues.
Among the potential solutions floated by fans and analysts is the inclusion of players who have seen limited action this season.
One such name is Djed Spence—a highly-rated full-back signed in the summer of 2022. However, Spence’s time at Tottenham has been underwhelming in terms of appearances, with just 11 outings to his name since his arrival.
Postecoglou has recently commented on Spence’s situation, providing a glimpse into the player’s role within the squad and whether he could be part of the solution to Tottenham’s current struggles.
Postecoglou on whether Djed Spence could start for Tottenham
Addressing the media, Postecoglou offered a measured perspective on Spence’s role and prospects at the club.
The Tottenham manager dismissed the notion of a significant turnaround in Spence’s career, instead focusing on the need for the player to remain prepared for opportunities.
He told football.london as relayed by Alasdair Gold on X: “I don’t know about a major turnaround. I think a major turnaround is Djed playing regularly at this level, just because he has hung around doesn’t mean that is a major turnaround.
“I still think a lot of that is Djed continuing to train hard and wait for his opportunity. Fitness wise he is always in good condition. We train pretty hard. Could he start a game? I think he could. Could he start multiple games?
“Probably not because he hasn’t played for quite a while. He has been in and around the squad. Particularly between now and Christmas opportunities may come up for him, he almost got on at the weekend but the red card changed things a little bit.
“I think the key for Djed is he is still training well and his focus is there and just to be ready to take the opportunity when it comes.”
The need for clarity in Tottenham’s full-back conundrum
While Postecoglou’s comments shed light on Spence’s readiness, they also raise questions about Tottenham’s strategy for their full-backs.
Spence is undoubtedly a player with potential, yet his sporadic appearances raise concerns about whether the club truly sees him as a long-term option.
If Spence is not deemed ready to take on a more significant role, then perhaps it is time for Tottenham to reassess their approach.
Keeping him on the bench, particularly when the starting full-backs could use a rest, benefits neither the player nor the team.
With the January transfer window approaching, Spurs may need to consider their options carefully. Whether it involves giving Spence a proper run in the side or moving him on to bring in a full-back that fits Postecoglou’s vision, decisive action is crucial.
After all, consistency on the flanks could play a pivotal role in ensuring Tottenham’s season does not slip away from them.
