Vermilion superintendent says cyberattack investigation is still ongoing
ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) -- The investigation into the cyberattack of the Vermilion Parish schools’ computer system, first reported in October, is still ongoing, school officials said.
In a post on the Vermilion Parish Facebook page Wednesday, Superintendent Tommy Byler said officials are still determining the extent of the damage.
"We are aware that the breach has made it to the 'dark web' and we are mandated by law to report what information was compromised," the post reads. "This time frame begins once we receive the final report from cyber forensic investigators. We anticipate this to take place early next week."
Byler said the district will release which of the servers were attacked and what information could have been located on those servers.
"Much of the information that is considered PII or personal information are housed in cloud storage away from our network," he said. "The information on the servers that were breached will determine the level of notification that we are required by law to share."
Byler compared the notification to letters from companies who have had credit card information breached.
"I can assure you that we are being guided by our legal department and the investigators as to what our next steps are in this process," he said. "We are not protecting, hiding or withholding information but rather we are following the guidelines given to us in an open investigation."
