First look at Royal Mint’s new Paul McCartney coin – how to get one

0

COIN collectors and Beatles fans alike may want to get their hands on a new coin celebrating the legend Sir Paul McCartney.

The Royal Mint is honouring former Beatles member Paul McCartney with his very own £5 coin collection.

The special-edition £5 coins come in silver and gold finish
While the Brilliant Uncirculated Coin has a unique coloured finish

The limited-edition coin features McCartney’s iconic Magic Piano as well as hidden references to his music career.

It is available to buy in a range of finishes as of today, December 6, marking the first time a Paul McCartney coin has ever been released.

It showcases his remarkable achievements as a Beatles and Wings member, as well as having sold over 100 million solo albums – becoming a classic household name.

The 82-year-old, who is set to perform in Manchester and London at the end of this month, said: “This feels like a huge honour.

“It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen as a kid.”

Collectors can buy the coin on the Royal Mint website, with prices starting from £15.50.

You can get it in a range of finishes, including a special uncirculated coloured edition.

Keep in mind that, as collector’s items, these are expected to increase in value over the coming years.

It is also important to note that the colour coin won’t be in circulation – meaning it doesn’t appear as a change in a store.

It will be high in demand, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to get your hands on one.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: “What makes this coin extra special is that Paul has been involved throughout the design process.

“The coin celebrates elements from throughout his solo career, and we hope fans will enjoy the layered references to songs, instruments and bands.”

Not only this, but in the beginning of 2025 the Royal Mint will be auctioning a gold edition of the collector’s coin – signed by McCartney himself.

It weighs five kilos and took over 250 hours to make, including three hours of polishing.

It will be auctioned alongside four silver five-kilo editions.

To find out more information on actions, launches and prices, go to the Royal Mint website.

How much is it worth?

As this coin has just been released today it is hard to know how much exactly you can make from reselling it.

But other commemorative coins have been know to sell for very good prices.

For example, the 1981 Silver Proof Crown £5 Coin featuring Charles and Diana recently sold for £20.30 with 9 bids on November 26.

Meanwhile, the 1981 goldproof edition sold for a whopping £500 on November 1.

And the 2011 Royal Wedding Silver Proof £5 coin for William and Kate sold for £75 on November 10, with four bids.

However, another person managed to score it for just £9.95 on November 29 – meaning they managed to spend over £65 less.

It is important to remember that coins are only worth how much someone is willing to pay for them.

How to spot rare coins and banknotes

Rare coins and notes hiding down the back of your sofa could sell for hundreds of pounds.

If you spot a rare £10 note, you might be able to sell it for multiple times its face value.

A good trick for making these spots is to keep an eye out for the serial numbers.

These numbers can be found on the side with the Monarch’s face, just under the value of £10 in the corner of the note.

Or if you have an unusual serial number on your note you could cash in thousands.

For example, one seller bagged £3,600 after spotting a specific serial number relating to the year Jane Austen was born on one of their notes.

To check if your notes are worth anything, you can do a quick search of previous sales on eBay.

Just tick “completed and sold items” and filter by the highest value.

It will give you an idea of what people are willing to pay for some notes.

But do bear in mind that yours is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

Again, this is also the case for coins – you can determine how rare your coin is by looking at the latest scarcity index.

Websites like Change Checker are useful for this and will provide an easy-to-understand overview.

We explain further how you can find out if you have a rare coin worth thousands sitting around the house.
