Remains of WWII airman returning to North Adams
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (NEWS10) -- The remains of a World War II airman from Berkshire County are being returned home on Friday.
Private First Class Bernard Calvi grew up in North Adams. He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 at the age of 21. He was serving in the Army Air Forces in the Philippines when the U.S. entered World War II.
He was injured during the Battle for the Philippines. He then returned to full duty until he was captured by Japanese forces. He died in 1942 after four months in captivity.
His remains are scheduled to arrive at Bradley International Airport Friday evening followed by a procession to North Adams. He will be laid to rest on Dec. 10.
