IPL 2025: We are set to head into the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with IPL 2025 to start on March 14 next year. Everyone knows Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the two most successful teams in IPL history but which is the worst team in the T20 league.
Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Bangalore franchise is yet to win a title although they have playing in the league since 2008. They have been runners-up a couple of times, the latest being against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2016.
The worst team in the Indian Premier League is actually Delhi Capitals. The GMR Group and JSW Sports co-owned franchise have also been part of the IPL since 2008 but have only reached the final once – in 2020 – when they lost to Mukesh Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians in the final.
Delhi Capitals are in worst shape in IPL
Talking about the worst teams in the IPL, Delhi Capitals will easily come out on top. This team has not only never won the IPL title but have not reached the IPL playoffs even in the last 4 years, since their final appearance in 2020.
In fact, apart from reaching the final in IPL 2020, they have progressed to the Playoffs only 4 times – in the first two editions in 2008 and 2009 and the playoffs in 2012 and 2019.
Team to lose most matches in IPL
So which is the team to have lost most matches in the IPL? Delhi Capitals have pipped Preity Zinta co-owned Punjab Kings in this aspect. In 252 matches till date, Delhi Capitals (earlier Delhi Daredevils) have lost 134 matches and won 112 games for a win-percentage of only 44.44.

Delhi Capitals have also failed to retain their former skipper Rishabh Pant and lost his bid in the IPL 2025 mega auction to Lucknow Super Giants, who made him the most expensive player in the league’s history with a bid of Rs 27 crore last month.
Following DC are Punjab Kings, who have lost 133 games in 246 matches and won 109 ties for a win-percentage of 44.3. PBKS also haven’t reached the playoff stages in he last nine years, since their final appearance once in IPL 2014, when they lost to Shah Rukh Khan’s side Kolkata Knight Riders.
What is record of Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore team?
While the RCB might not have won the IPL title ever like Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, they have slightly better record than the other two sides. In 256 matches, they have won 121 games and lost 128 with a winning-percentage of 47.26.
MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings are the most successful side in IPL till date with 138 wins in 239 matches and just 98 losses. KKR are the 2nd most successful side after winning the IPL 2024 title with 130 wins in 252 matches and just 117 losses.
