UK airport issues passenger warning over predicted 90mph winds
Cardiff Airport has issued a warning to passengers as Wales is about to be hit by Storm Darragh.
A rare red Met Office ‘danger to life’ warning for wind has been put in place across much of Wales on Saturday, from 3-11am.
Now officials are warning passengers to ‘take extra care’ when making their way to the airport tomorrow.
A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport said: ‘Please check before you travel. We advise you to take extra care and allow additional time when travelling to the airport.
‘For the latest updates on flight information, visit our website. Safe travels!’
Red weather warnings are the most serious that the Met Office issue, with them only being put in place if meteorologists believe that dangerous, potentially life-threatening weather is imminent.
Winds of up to 80mph were initially expected, but the Met Office now fear that the UK could be set to see wind speeds reaching 90mph.
Storm Darragh is the UK’s fourth major storm this season, and is expected to last for up to four days.
It’s already causing problems for commuters, after strong winds blew a tree over in the Leeds area which damaged overhead electric cables, and heavy rain flooded the railway near Stockport.
National Rail has also issued advice to Transport for Wales, Northern and South Western Railway train passengers, with services already cancelled in anticipation of the severe weather.
The following services are being suspended in response to Storm Darragh:
- Between Llandudno / Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog – suspended on Saturday, December 7
- Between Llandrindod and Shrewsbury – not running from 9pm on Friday
- Between Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock / Milford Haven / Fishguard Harbour – a ‘high number of trains’ won’t run from 9pm on Friday
A spokesperson for National Rail said: ‘From this evening, Storm Darragh is expected to bring significant disruption with heavy rain and wind.
‘Please check your journey in full before travelling as it may mean last services of the day are cancelled and you may not reach your destination.’
Parts of the UK were battered by extreme weather last week after Storm Bert and then Storm Conall brought heavy rain and flooding.
