Sports Briefs: Amborn rains down 40 in San Domenico victory
Carly Amborn scored a career-high 40 points and outscored Granada by herself as San Domenico secured a 58-38 win at the Sonoma Valley girls basketball tournament. Amborn, a Stanford commit, scored from all over the court to lead the way for the Panthers. Tosia Konczak added 10 points.
San Domenico faces Archie Williams, where Amborn played as a freshman and sophomore before transferring, on Friday night.
- Reese Patton locked in on defense and scored a team-high 17 points as Archie Williams took down Ukiah 40-36 at the Sonoma Valley tournament. Lydia Battaglia scored seven points while Lila Peterson and Parker Conrad scored six apiece.
- Redwood High’s Kitty White and Maya Saibel hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers during the second half to lock down a 54-51 victory over Riordan. Freshman Drew Schultz had 17 points for the Giants (3-1), while White had 14 and Saibel finished with 13. The Giants are scheduled to play Acalanes in the second round of the LadyCat Classic at Marin Catholic at 6:30 p.m. Friday. In Thursday’s nightcap, host Marin Catholic beat Mission Prep, 50-37.
- The Branson School beat Credo, 47-17, in Thursday’s opening round of the Lady Mustang Tip-Off Classic at St. Vincent of Petaluma. The Bulls (2-0) are scheduled to play Novato at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Hornets were a first-round winner over John Swett. Host St. Vincent will play Victory Christian at 8 p.m. in the other semifinal.
- San Marin dueled Northgate to the bitter end before falling, 51-49, at the opener of the Peyo Classic in Orinda. Abigail Bartholo led the Mustangs with 16 points, including three from beyond the arc. Eleanna Schram had 12 points for the Mustangs, while Quincy Dean posted 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Boys basketball
Henry Dibble scored 19 points and had six rebounds as Marin Catholic picked up its first win of the season, 58-41 over James Logan at the Montgomery tournament on Thursday. Joe Hammond had 15 points and six steals for MC. Jake Ryan scored 10 and Oliver Myers had nine points, five assists, and four rebounds. MC plays North of Bakersfield in the semifinals on Friday night.
- San Domenico defeated Tam, 79-34, on the back of a tenacious defense that included 21 steals. Panthers senior Gavin Early led the way with 23 points, six rebounds and seven steals before sitting out the fourth quarter. San Domenico senior Kris Jakstas showcased a solid all-around game with 16 points, five rebounds, three steals and four assists. San Domenico will take on Maria Carrillo at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Tam is scheduled to play Archie Williams on Tuesday.
- Novato fell to Alhambra, 73-47, in a first-round matchup at the Hornets’ own tournament. Novato will play either St. Patrick-St. Vincent or Petaluma in the second round on Friday at 5 p.m.
- Terra Linda beat College Prep, 58-38, Friday at the Redwood Christian Tournament to stretch the Trojans’ record to 3-0. In other first-round action, Marin Academy advanced past Berean Christian, 69-46.
- Dante Stallone had 17 points and Brian Wright added 16 as Archie Williams picked up a 63-38 win over host Shasta in the first round of the Harlan Carter Classic on Thursday night. Ephraim Sohn filled up the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. The Peregrine Falcons (1-1) face Enterprise in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Boys soccer
Sean Chamberlin scored twice to lead Archie Williams to a 4-2 road win against Campolindo on Wednesday night. Manny Cardenas and Jackson Richardson also scored for the Peregrine Falcons (1-0-0).
- Marin Catholic snagged its first win of the season, taking down Casa Grande 2-1 on Thursday night. MC (1-1-0) lost to University 1-0 earlier in the week.
Girls soccer
Allegra Anderoli and Addie Covey both scored and had an assist as Tam secured a 3-0 win against Urban on Thursday. Anderoli opened the scoring on an assist from Sawyer Merrick then assisted Covey to make it 2-0. Tam (2-0-0) extended to a 3-0 lead when Covey assisted Lauren Willard for the final goal.
- Josie Quinby had a hat trick and assisted another goal as Terra Linda rolled past Santa Rosa 7-1 on Thursday night. Rashell Diaz and freshman Nina Iyer both had a goal and an assist for TL (1-0-1). The Trojans’ other goals came from Daisy Ruiz and Dyanna Perez while Sienna Economou and Isabelle Rosetti provided assists.
- Jaela Brown continued her big week with a goal and an assist for San Rafael in a 3-0 victory against Ygnacio Valley on Thursday night. Brown scored four goals in San Rafael’s win on Tuesday. Ryder Higgins Jones and Myrna Escamilla also scored for the Bulldogs (2-0-0). Arlin Guzman and Darby Fones also had assists.
- Luna Diaz netted the only goal of the game, unassisted, to lift Branson (3-0-0) to a 1-0 road win against Petaluma on Thursday night.
- Marin Academy (1-0-1) and Archie Williams (0-1-1) battled to a 0-0 tie on Thursday.
College volleyball
A few Marin standouts are set to compete in the NCAA Tournament which began on Thursday.
A pair of former Marin Catholic standouts are teaming up for Oklahoma, a No. 8 seed. Outside hitter Kari Geissberger and setter Leah Wilton-LaBoy both transferred to Oklahoma prior to this season, from Loyola Marymount and Utah State, respectively.
Geissberger ranks second on the Sooners with 239 kills this season while starting 22 of 24 matches. Wilton-LaBoy ranks second on the team with 157 assists, starting three games and playing in 11.
Oklahoma opens with a first-round match against UTEP at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Another former MC standout, libero Tehani Ulufatu, plays for Baylor and ranks third in digs with 180 while starting 14 times in 29 games this season. Ulufatu had five digs as Baylor, a No. 4 seed, swept Wofford 3-0 on Thursday. Bayler plays No. 5 Dayton on Friday.
Former San Rafael High standout Mary Healy is on the roster for North Carolina State, which begins play against Florida at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Marin players have had plenty of recent success in the tournament with former San Marin and MC standout Bella Bergmark winning back-to-back national championships with Texas in 2022-3.
