Meanwhile the following Saturday has proven to be the second most popular time with the third weekend just behind.

One in ten homes beat the rush by putting their tree and decorations up in November and it has been revealed that many Brits even buy trees during the week.

Savvy savers tend to wait until the last minute with one in 50 homes waiting until Christmas Eve to purchase their tree.

Over half of the country said they prefer an artificial Christmas tree, whilst a third commit to a real one.

And as much as 14 per cent said they don’t buy a tree or decorations at all.

The results are from a survey of 1,000 people by online store Furniturebox.

The survey found that 66 per cent of households buy their trees on a Saturday  and then spend the whole weekend decorating it.

Over half of respondents buy new decorations each year, while 48 per cent said they recycle old decorations to save on costs.

Concerns of falling needles and a dried out looking tree were among the top concerns expressed by respondents with 62 per cent saying this was a worry.

As for external festive displays, some 63 per cent of the people surveyed said they tend to decorate their front doors with a wreath.

Christmas lights were less popular as a form of outdoor decoration with just 28 per cent of people claiming to use them.

The survey found that putting up Christmas tree decorations marked the start of the Christmas holiday for a whopping 72 per cent of homeowners.

Six out of ten homes said they take down their Christmas Tree by New Year.

When it comes to tradition a number of people admitted to sticking to a strict routine, exclusively putting up decorations at the same time each year.

The Christmas Tree was first popularised by Queen Victoria and husband Prince Albert in 1848 when they were pictured around their festive fir.

A Furniturebox spokesperson said: “This Saturday is Christmas Tree Day in the UK when more people will buy trees than any other.

“There is a lot of debate about when is the best date to put up the Christmas trees and decorations.

“Some people like to turn the whole of December into a Christmas holiday while others prefer to wait – often because they fear their Christmas tree will die before Christmas Day.

“What nearly all of us agree on is that we don’t feel Christmassy until we buy a tree and decorate our homes.”
