The big budget film sets abandoned and left to rot – from Jurassic World to Hunger Games
FILM fans can travel around the world to visit the real-life sets of their favourite movies.
But not all former locations are maintained after shooting has wrapped – with many famous ones left derelict.
From Jurrasic World to The Hunger Games, here we take a look at the creepy abanonded sets from some of the biggest motion pictures.
Jurassic World
Set 22 years after the original Jurassic Park movies, Jurassic World also takes place on the fictional Isla Nublar, off the coast of Costa Rica.
On the island is a luxury resort and theme park where the public can get up close and personal with cloned dinosaurs.
But, of course, things go wrong and the resort is ravaged by the animals.
The Main Street and boardwalk scenes were filmed in the car park of the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans theme park in Louisiana.
Six Flags New Orleans was left in a state of disrepair are Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and permanently closed to the public.
The Hills Have Eyes
The 2014 cult horror flick was set in New Mexico and the main characters stop at an eerie gas station to ask for directions.
After being advised to take a “short cut” a series of very guresome events occur.
But the now-abandoned gas station is actually located in Agadir, Morocco and is even more creepy these days.
Inside the store is still stocked with fake goods and filled with creepy puppets.
And outside it is surrounded by rusty cars.
Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr‘s 2008 Marvel classic sees his character Tony Stark held captive in caves in Afghanistan.
It is there that he develops his first Iron Man suit.
But the location of the set was actually the shafts of the Cerro Gordo Mines in Inyo County, California.
The former mining town was abandoned for years and sold in 2018 for £1.1m.
Looper
In 2012 Bruce Willis starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in sci-fi movie Looper.
One scene showed Bruce’s character in a showdown with Looper Joe, a younger version of himself.
The pivotal moment took place in a diner in the middle of an open field near Napoleonville, Louisiana, which has been left to rot.
The Fugitive
Fans can still see the train that almost killed Harrison Ford‘s character Dr Richard Kimble in the 1993 movie The Fugitive.
Dr Richard escapes from prison van just moments before it’s struck by the train.
Despite the fact the scene is just a minute long, it cost an eye-watering £1.18m to shoot.
Both the train and the bus have been left to rust in the Great Smokey Mountains of North Carolina.
The Hunger Games
Scenes set in District 12 in the 2012 post-apocalyptic movie actually took place in Henry Mill Village in Burke County, North Carolina.
In the movie it was home to Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss.
But in real life it was previously a booming textile town that have become ruins since filming took place.
It’s so dangerous now that fans have been advised not to enter the homes that are still standing.
