Ange Postecoglou says he does not need support as poor Spurs form continues
Ange Postecoglou has vowed to stay determined to his cause in his press conference ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s weekend clash with Chelsea, with questions posed over a lack of support from the club.
Tottenham’s foul form: a problem further up the hierarchy?
Tottenham have won just one of their past six matches in all competitions and for the most part, the performances have been as worrying as the results. From conceding cheap goals to players up front going missing for 90 minutes, things are not looking good.
As a consequence of Tottenham’s repeatedly poor displays, Ange Postecoglou finds himself under pressure, with supporters at Bournemouth giving him a frosty reception after Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat last night.
But with injuries highlighting the lack of squad depth in some positions, particularly the defence, and reports of players eager to move on and unrest over contract situations, most notably with Spurs captain, Heung-min-Son, questions are being asked on whether the club are doing enough to back the Tottenham manager.
Ange Postecoglou will not rely on anyone’s backing
Postecoglou said his side were ‘really disappointing’ and ‘not good enough’ against Bournemouth, claiming they let their opponents play and that much of the defeat was self-inflicted (Tottenham Hotspur).
But he has delivered a non-nonsense message in his press conference, making it clear he is not concerned with being backed by the club in order to succeed.
Speaking on whether he is feeling support from the club, Postecoglou said (Football London): “I don’t need support. I don’t worry about contracts. I don’t worry about support.
“I just want to set out to achieve what I wanted to and that’s to bring success to this football club. I’ll work my backside off to do that and I won’t be deterred from that.”
In terms of support from the fans themselves, Ange said (BBC): “They aren’t behind me, they are behind the club. I have got no interest in who is behind me. Last night you have to figure the fans who travel to Bournemouth are fairly hardcore supporters. They weren’t happy with what they saw and they felt like they needed to give some feedback. I took the feedback onboard and we move on.”
On whether he has a message for fans, Ange Postecoglou added: “As I said last night, no messages. I am here, I am going to fight to make sure we bring success to this football club. Nothing really changes. Where there is doubt, whether that is internally or externally, it just gets my resolve stronger to make sure we get it right.”
Managers come and go but the key problem remains
When asked how Spurs can get through these troubled times with a stretched and injured squad, Postecoglou said in his press conference: “We know that, I think that is put to one side. For me the disappointment last night, there was a repeat of cycle of us going into games, starting well enough but then allowing the opposition to get a grip on it by either conceding a sloppy goal – like we did last night – or not taking our opportunities.
“We need to break that cycle, irrespective of where we are at the moment. We know we are really thin on the ground in terms of squad numbers. We know there is not a lot of opportunity to rotate and rest players. We paid the price with Benny [Davies] last night.
“Those are known things. what also is known is we repeatedly shot ourselves in the foot in games like last night and we need to change that.”
Tottenham’s owners are always a big talking point when it comes to managerial success at the club. Although Postecoglou has chosen not to focus on what could be considered a lack of support, former Spurs managers, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, have both been quite public about what they think of Daniel Levy, so the problem is nothing new.
The summer transfer window may have seen some talented youngsters arrive, but Tottenham’s business then has left them with a squad unable to function with the number of players currently available. The club must do all they can to back Postecoglou because hiring someone else will only yield the same overall problems.
