Tottenham call up 16-year-old to first-team training – Squad number 102
Ange Postecoglou is dealing with a spate of injuries in his backline and it turns out that he has called up a 16-year-old academy youngster to join the Tottenham squad.
Tottenham have big issues at centre-back
Tottenham were already without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven and to make matters worse, Ben Davies came off with a hamstring injury in the 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
That poses a serious issue for Ange Postecoglou, who might potentially be forced to play Archie Gray alongside Radu Dragusin in the heart of Spurs’ defence for the London derby against Chelsea.
The Tottenham head coach might perhaps be hoping that Cristian Romero somehow recovers in time for Sunday’s clash, but things do not look promising at the moment.
Postecoglou calls up young defender to the squad
It looks like the Tottenham head coach is now turning to the club’s academy for solutions. Interestingly, the player in question seems to be training with the squad number 102.
TBR Football have revealed that Spurs academy centre-back Malachi Hardy trained with the senior squad ahead of their trip to Vitality Stadium.
The Watford-born defender, who captains England’s Under-17s, has been with the Spurs academy since he was eight years old, and he has impressed for Tottenham’s Under-18s this season.
This is not the first time that the teenager has trained with the senior squad, having joined the first-team last month as well.
Could Malachi Hardy be involved against Chelsea?
If Romero is not passed fit for Sunday’s clash, Hardy might have a chance to make the matchday squad against the Blues.
Postecoglou and his coaching staff evidently rate the young centre-back as it is not often that a 16-year-old is called up to train with the senior squad.
However, one would think that Hardy is extremely unlikely to be handed his debut, with Gray likely to get the nod to start.
