Topeka teacher returning from 12-month military deployment

Update 11:45: Dr. Aarion Gray says Phillip's plane will arrive on time at 2:10 p.m.

Update 10:15 a.m.: The Adjutant General's Department of public affairs says the flight has been delayed to 4 p.m.

TOPEKA (KSNT)—Topeka Public Schools (TPS) announced on Friday that one of its educators will be returning to school after a 12-month military deployment.

According to TPS, D'Andre Phillips, an educator at Eisenhower Middle School and an alumnus of Highland Park High School, will arrive at Forbes Field at 2:10 p.m. He was serving in Kuwait for the U.S. Army. Attendees can gather in the lobby area which will open at 1 p.m.

"After overcoming challenges, including periods of homelessness during his youth, Mr. Phillips has distinguished himself as an inspirational figure within our educational community," TPS General Director of Instructional Services Dr. Aarion Gray said. "His commitment extends beyond the classroom, having served our country with honor."

Gray said Phillips will be returning to the classroom on Jan. 2.
