Comme un Lego
Comme un Lego is a minimalist coffee table by the Mannheim and Paris-based ceramic artist, Emmanuel Boos. Composed of 98 modular porcelain bricks, this “table-game sculpture” blurs the line between art and design, inviting users to stack, rearrange, and reassemble the piece.
The table draws inspiration from minimalist artist Carl Andre’s sculptural work Equivalent VIII (1966), which features 120 firebricks arranged in a rectangle on the ground, inviting viewers to engage with its materiality and surrounding space. Similarly, Comme un Lego encourages interaction with its light yet sturdy bricks, emphasizing the tension between fragility and functionality.
Comme un Lego is simple in appearance but is crafted through a complex process. In making each brick, Boos casts and slab-builds the porcelain, polishes, and fires it with a Tenmoku glaze at a very high temperature. This process results in conceptually playful individual pieces characterized by a demure and restrained color palette of rich reddish-browns and inky blacks.
Each table is one-of-a-kind due to the glazing process and Boos’ artisanal research, where he seeks to create new glazes that elicit poetic emotions. For commission, the size and shape of the table, along with the choice of glaze can be discussed with the artist.
Comme un Lego received a Jury Special Mention at the 2024 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.
