Albany chef to host community meal for 500 families

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A local chef and theater are coming together to host a holiday dinner for 500 families on Saturday, December 14. Chef Jermaine Wright of 8 County Kitchen and Palace Theatre aims to feed 500 people while hosting a food and toy drive right before the holidays through the Each One, Feed One Holiday Harvest.

In the spirit of Kwanzaa principle Ujima, Wright plans to serve free hot meals to the community while collecting unopened and unwrapped toys for community members and organizations in need. Admission to the event is one canned or Community Fridge food item or a new, unopened toy.

The event is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and anyone interested in participating must register online. Below is a complete list of acceptable items for the Free Food Fridge and toy donations.

Free Food Fridge

Leafy greens: kale, collards, spinach, mixed lettuce, cabbage, and bok choy
Veggies or root veggies: carrots, broccoli, squash, peppers, onions, reddish, and potatoes
Fruits: Apples, oranges, bananas, berries, limes, lemons, and melon
Frozen foods: Fruits, veggies, pizza
Beverages: water, juice, kombucha (must be resealable)
Milk or dairy alternatives: oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk
Yogurt or alternatives: dairy, almond, soy-based yogurts (preferably drinkable)
Eggs: Fresh or boiled
Bread: sliced bread, bagels, or pita bread
Spread or dips: butter, margarine, hummus, pesto, cheese, salsa
Individually wrapped: granola bars, protein bars, meal bars, oatmeal, cheese sticks
