Prep basketball roundup: Early rises to challenge in San Domenico victory
Gavin Early scored more than 20 points for the third consecutive game, leading the San Domenico boys basketball team past Maria Carrillo 68-44 on Saturday.
Early had 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three steals while playing in just the first three quarters. Kris Jakstas hit four 3-pointers en route to a 17-point game.
The Panthers (4-1) are set to face Skyline at 2:45 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Red Brown Tournament at Archie Williams.
- Grady Stewart added 11 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and two steals as Archie Williams took fourth place at the Harlan Carter Tournament in Redding after falling 66-55 to Foothill on Saturday. Brian Wright, who made the all-tournament team, put up a 22-point, 11-rebound stat line as Archie Williams lost to Enterprise 59-54 in Friday’s semifinal. The Peregrine Falcons (1-3) host Tam on Tuesday then host the Red Brown Tournament from Thursday to Saturday.
- Joe Hammond and Jake Ryan both scored 10 points and were named to the all-tournament team as Marin Catholic fell 45-34 against Campolindo at the Montgomery tournament. Bentley Morrow added nine points for MC (2-2).
- NJ Gray scored 25 points to lead Branson to a 68-45 road win against Menlo-Atherton on Saturday. The Bulls (1-2) secured their first win after pulling away in the second and third quarters. Chase Robsertson scored 17 points and Kaden Fortune added 10.
- Brennan Woodley delivered an impressive 23 points, including 19 in the second half, to help seal Redwood’s 55-43 victory over Mountain House on Saturday at the Edison Winners Classic in Stockton. The Giants’ Harry White stood out with five 3-pointers, finishing with 17 points. Redwood (2-1) is slated to take on San Ramon Valley on Tuesday.
- All-Tournament selection Gio Brovelli pumped in 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead San Rafael to a 64-58 overtime win against Alhambra for third place at the Novato tournament on Saturday. Bulldogs freshman Kai Sendel scored eight points, including two big 3-pointers in the third quarter. Sophomore Will Healy grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs improved to 6-2.
- Terra Linda beat Cornerstone Christian, 64-53 on Saturday, to win the Redwood Christian Tournament championship. No further details were available at press time.
Girls basketball
San Domenico, playing without Stanford-bound Carly Amborn due to an injury, fell to Montgomery 45-29 in the championship game of the Sonoma Valley tournament on Saturday. Tosia Konczak stepped up in Amborn’s absence, scoring 21 points and defending Montgomery standout Kylin Devries. Montgomery led 25-17 at the half and pulled away after San Domenico made a run early in the fourth quarter. Konczak and Amborn, who scored a career-high 40 points on Thursday, were both named to the all-tournament team.
- The host Dragons edged Archie Williams High, 35-34, at the Sonoma Valley tournament on Saturday. The Peregrine Falcons (2-3) are scheduled to head to Pacifica to play Half Moon Bay in tournament action on Thursday.
- Delaney Butler provided the game-winning points for the second game in a row as San Marin (4-2) pulled out a 32-30 win against Heritage at the Miramonte tournament on Saturday. Quincy Dean provided the assist on the critical bucket by Butler, who was named to the all-tournament team. All three of San Marin’s games at the tournament were decided by two points or less.
- Marin Academy beat Redwood Christian, 52-12, to claim seventh place at the Wildcats’ own Hoops vs. Cancer tournament on Saturday. In other tournament results, Tam beat Liberty, 39-37, for third place and Sonoma Academy beat San Rafael in the consolation championship.
