Sports briefs: Marin Catholic rallies for 2-1 victory against Terra Linda
Enrique Guzman scored the winning goal as the Marin Catholic boys soccer team rallied past host Terra Linda 2-1 in a non-league game on Saturday.
Guzman’s goal was assisted by Charlie Carroll and helped MC (2-1-0) rally out of a 1-0 halftime hole. Dylan Hyman got MC on the board following an assist from Griffin Ochoa. Bodie Ransom made several saves to keep the Wildcats in the game.
Monty Cooke scored his second goal of the week for TL (1-1-0), assisted by Ryan Maldonado.
- San Domenico outlasted Novato Saturday in a back-and-forth affair, securing a 3-2 win on James Cunningham’s second goal of the game. Cunningham opening the scoring in the 18th minute then Novato quickly scored an equalizer when Ben DePalma hit a half volley from about 30 yards out. Guilherme Guioto restored San Domenico’s advantage with a goal late in the first half. Novato (0-1-0) equalized again early in the second half as DePalma got his second, assisted by Lukas Sibrian, before Cunningham provided the eventual game winner for the Panthers (2-0-0).
- Dominic Yu scored in the 15th minute as Marin Academy battled host Whitney to a 1-1 draw in a tournament match on Friday night. Mac Riley provided the assist for the Wildcats (0-0-1).
- Kian Caveney and Aidan Whitmore scored two goals apiece as San Marin rolled to a 7-1 win against Vallejo on Friday night. Edwin Lopez, Joshua Calderon, and Ivan Gomez also had goals for the Mustangs (2-0-0), who defeated Petaluma 2-1 earlier in the week. San Marin got assists from Buddy Nebb, Chris Martin, Lopez, Gomez, Whitmore, and Kiya Namiranian.
Girls soccer
Sarah Farese scored twice to guide Redwood to a 5-0 win against Silver Creek at the Fremont tournament on Saturday. Farese scored back-to-back goals after Zoe Clark had opening the scoring for the Giants (2-0-0).
Lily O’Shea and Cora Champommier scored the last two goals. Both of Farese’s goals were assisted by Kaia Amir. Evelyn Spiegel, Teagan McCormick, and Shona Gallagher had the other assists.
- Luna Diaz scored twice and Catrin Howell had two assists to pace Branson in a 4-0 victory against Rancho Cotate on Saturday. The two players combined for the opening goal in the 22nd minute, with Howell assisting Diaz. Branson (4-0-0) built a 3-0 halftime lead when Hailey Sellers scored in the 32nd minute and Riley Pearson found the back of the net in the 37th — assisted by Howell and Whitney Collet, respectively. Diaz capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.
- Disa Doan was one of the bright spots for Novato (0-1-0), forcing a save from the opposing goalie in a 9-0 loss to Piner on Friday. Audrey Kobayashi and Emi Erving also combined to create a good scoring opportunity for the Hornets.
Prep football
Novato’s Gabe Casanovas provided a dual threat at quarterback to lead St. Vincent de Paul to a 42-14 road victory over Hughson in the NorCal Division 4-AA Regional Bowl on Friday night.
Casanovas completed 9 of 14 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, adding 77 rushing yards on eight carries. Receiver Jack Ellis, another Novato resident, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score.
St. Vincent (13-1) faces Highland of Palmdale (11-4) for the state title at 4 p.m. on Friday at Long Beach Community College. St. Vincent is seeking its second consecutive state title after defeating Wasco 27-6 in the 6-AA game last season.
College football
Former Marin Catholic standout Matteo Perez had 43 scrimmage yards to help UC Davis advance in the FCS playoffs with a 42-10 win against Illinois State in the second round on Saturday. Perez had six carries for 28 yards and caught one pass for another 15 yards in the win.
The fifth-seeded Aggies also feature a number of other former MC standouts on the roster, with running back Michael Ingrassia, defensive back Gaven Cooke, wide receiver Greer Arthur, plus defensive lineman Trent Carrade.
College volleyball
Oklahoma, with former Marin Catholic standouts Kari Geissberger and Leah Wilton-LaBoy on the roster, saw its NCAA Tournament come to an end Saturday following a 3-0 loss to No. 1 seed Pittsburgh. Oklahoma, a No. 8 seed, got team highs of 12 kills and eight block assists from Geissberger, who hit .571 for the match.
Men’s basketball
Nathan Ilunga made back-to-back 3-pointers inside the final 5 minutes to give Dominican University the lead for good in a 61-58 victory against Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
Ilunga’s personal 6-0 run gave the Penguins a 54-51 lead with 3 minutes, 29 seconds to play. Darius Best led the Penguins (6-4, 1-1 PacWest) with 16 points and Jaayden Bush scored 14. Ilunga added a team-high eight rebounds.
Women’s basketball
Dominican used a big second quarter to take the lead into the half but ultimately fell 84-77 against Azusa Pacific in a wild back-and-forth game Saturday.
Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 27-11 lead in the first quarter only to see the Penguins respond with a 30-11 second quarter to take a 41-38 lead at the half. Dominican won the third quarter by three points before Asuza Pacific closed the game on a 28-15 run.
Alaiyah San Juan and Mikayla Amoroso tied for team-high honors with 13 points apiece for the Penguins (6-7, 0-2 PacWest). Andraya Perez added 12 points and Adia Walker scored 10, adding team-highs of nine rebounds and five assists.
