Syria's Baath party, under the Assad dynasty, ruled with an iron fist for over five decades. Hafez al-Assad seized power in a 1970 coup, establishing a repressive regime. His son, Bashar, continued the brutal legacy, violently suppressing the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings. Rebel forces ultimately overthrew the government in a swift offensive, ending the Assads' reign.
