Jermain Defoe says only one Tottenham star has been consistently great this season
Jermain Defoe has given a scathing indictment of the Tottenham squad, insisting that all but one of their players have not been up to scratch this season.
Tottenham have flattered to deceive this season
Coming into the season, many Tottenham fans expected the side to push on from their fifth-place finish last season and close the gap to the best sides in the Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou also made some bold declarations at the start of the campaign, pointing out that his sides always win trophies in his second season in charge.
Instead, we are almost into Christmas and the Lilywhites find themselves mired in midtable mediocrity.
Jermain Defoe points the finger at the squad
A lot of the criticism has understandably fallen on Postecoglou while many Spurs fans have also pointed the finger at the club’s hierarchy for not sufficiently strengthening the squad.
However, Defoe has pointed the finger squarely at the players, insisting that everyone apart from Dejan Kulusevski has failed to deliver consistent displays.
The former Spurs striker told Amazon Prime Video: “The Premier League is the best league in the world. You have your ups and downs, but at the same time I feel like you can’t have one player out of the whole group who keeps up those levels of performances, and Kulusevski is the only one really who you can say that does that.”
Too many players have underperformed at the same time
Unfortunately for Spurs, the likes of Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, who are all among the club’s best players, have failed to hit their expected heights this season.
Postecoglou has also not been helped by the fact that Micky van de Ven has picked up another hamstring injury, while Rodrigo Bentancur has been suspended just as he was reaching the levels he hit before his ACL injury.
