PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Thousands of stuffed animals were launched onto the rink Sunday night in an annual event for local charities.
For the 25th year, the Portland Winterhawks' hosted their annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum when they faced the Vancouver Giants. (The 4 p.m. game was televised on Portland’s CW, KOIN’s sister station.)
Fans were encouraged to bring teddy bears and other stuffed toys to the game, and then throw them on the ice when the Winterhawks scored their first goal.
All of the stuffed animals were then collected and donated as gifts to Portland charities and hospitals ahead of the holidays.
Last year, more than 13,000 bears were donated.
