Extraordinary footage from Northern Ireland shows a waterfall running backwards after powerful winds from Storm Darragh force it to reverse its flow.

BBC reporter Barra Best shared a clip of the scene on X, formerly Twitter, which showed a Waterfall between Downhill and Benone on the north coast going backwards during the storm.

Over 48,000 people across Northern Ireland were left without power during the peak of the storm on Saturday, with around 15,000 homes and business still without electricity today.

Energy provider NIE Networks has said it may be a number of days before they can reconnect all those affected, and has offered community support to anyone affected by the outages.

NIE Networks operations manager Alex Houston said: ‘Most of the faults affecting high numbers of customers have been repaired which has allowed us to restore significant numbers of customers.

‘However, there are still around 1,200 faults across the network some of which are affecting very small numbers of customers so we do anticipate that it will take some time before we can get all of these cleared.’

An amber warning for wind was issued in the region on Saturday, with a yellow wind warning remaining in place until 6pm on Sunday.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said it responded to about 900 incidents across the weekend, mainly debris on roads, fallen trees and flooding.

Community assistance will be available across Northern Ireland on Sunday between 14:00 to 16:00, with leisure centres in the following areas offering assistance to those still without power:

  • South Lake Leisure Centre, Craigavon
  • Lagan Valley Leisureplex, Lisburn
  • Ards Blair Mayne, Newtownards
  • Seven Towers, Ballymena
  • Cookstown Leisure Centre
  • Kilkeel Leisure Centre
  • Fermanagh Lakeland Forum

The centres will offer warm drinks, charging and changing facilities, and Red Cross volunteers will be working with NIE Networks staff to provide support and answer any questions.
