After benching star guard, Green Bay coach Doug Gottlieb provides timetable on his return

By ADAM ZAGORIA

After benching star guard Anthony Roy for Saturday’s 83-61 loss to Cleveland State, Green Bay coach Doug Gottlieb told ZAGSBLOG he expects the nation’s leading scorer back for the team’s next game.

Green Bay (2-8) hosts rival Milwaukee on Wednesday in the Battle Of I-43 and the 6-foot-5 Roy, averaging a nation’s best 28.0 ppg along with 5.8 rpg and 2.8 apg, will return.

“I do not believe in double jeopardy,” Gottlieb said Sunday morning via text.

“Ant violated some basic team rules, and I chose to sit him against Cleveland State. Keeping a man who loves basketball away from basketball when he desperately wants to help us win is punishment enough. We are on to Milwaukee.”

Roy apologized later Sunday on social media for missing shootaround ahead of the game, and Gottlieb Tweeted a “Respect” meme.

Gottlieb previously benched Roy for the second half of the team’s loss to Campbell on Nov. 30 for what he told reporters was an attitude of entitlement. He still scored 20 points in the loss.

Four days later, Roy went for 34 points and 7 rebounds in a loss to IU Indy.

Gottlieb was asked by reporters why he chose to bench Roy on Saturday.

“I mean, it’s a coach’s decision,” he said. “I’m not going to open the door and say, ‘This is how it goes.’ I made the decision not to play him. That’s it.”

As the best scorer in college basketball, a shooter with deep range and a terrific passer, Roy has pro potential. Now he will return for Green Bay’s next game.
