Reuters: Bashar al-Assad likely killed in air crash, sources say

Reuters reported, citing its sources, that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is likely to have been killed in an air crash.

The news agency stated on Sunday, December 8 that a Syrian source indicated there is a “strong possibility” that Bashar al-Assad died in an air crash.

Earlier, the media had reported, based on military sources in Syria, that Bashar al-Assad left Damascus by plane for an unknown destination.

FlightRadar, after publishing the news, confirmed that a Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time when the capital was reportedly captured by rebels.

The site, which tracks flight paths, released a video showing the flight of a plane from Damascus toward Homs, but the plane suddenly disappeared from radar.

FlightRadar explained that the plane carrying Bashar al-Assad turned off its radar after circling around Homs to hide its escape route from tracking devices.

Reuters has not independently confirmed Assad’s presence on the plane, but two Syrian sources reported that “there is a very high likelihood that Assad may have been killed in an air crash.”

No other media outlet has confirmed the report that Bashar al-Assad may have died in an air crash.
