Assad flees Damascus as rebels take control; army confirms Government’s collapse
Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, left the country for an unknown destination as rebel forces advanced toward Damascus. The Syrian Army’s commander officially confirmed the collapse of the Assad government.
Reuters reported on Sunday, December 8 that according to a Syrian Army officer, the military leadership has informed all forces about the fall of Assad’s government.
The media also quoted two senior Syrian military officers who confirmed that Bashar al-Assad left Damascus for an unknown destination. Some Arabic media outlets are speculating that Assad may have traveled to the United Arab Emirates.
Rebels opposing Assad’s government entered Damascus, the Syrian capital, early this morning. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali announced that he would cooperate with a new government based on the will of the people.
Haitham al-Bahra, the head of the main opposition group to Bashar al-Assad’s government, who is currently in Turkey, also confirmed the fall of Assad’s regime and added that “Damascus is now free of Assad.”
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Mr. al-Bahra stated, “The power transition will take place under the coordination of the United Nations, and government offices will resume normal operations within two days.”
The departure of Bashar al-Assad and the fall of his government mark a significant turning point in the Syrian conflict. This shift could lead to the beginning of a new political phase in Syria, one that may open the door for peace talks and reconstruction efforts in the war-torn nation.
As the country transitions, the role of international bodies, particularly the United Nations, will be crucial in ensuring a peaceful and orderly handover of power. However, the road ahead remains uncertain, as various factions and foreign powers have a stake in Syria’s future. The next steps in this evolving situation will likely determine the long-term stability and reconstruction of the country.
