Gas prices drop to lowest in 3 years, AAA says

(KRON) – Good news for the millions of drivers on American roads: Gas prices are falling. The national average for a gallon of gas has hit a three-year low, the American Automobile Association (AAA) recently announced.

As of Sunday, the national average cost for one gallon of regular gasoline sat at $3.01, according to AAA. That's the lowest in more than three years, the automotive agency reports.

AAA made the announcement on Thursday when gas prices plunged to an average of $3.03 per gallon. However, a few days later, the prices went even lower — nearing below the $3 mark that was last recorded on May 11, 2021, according to AAA.

“The national average is tantalizingly close to falling below $3 a gallon, and it could happen in a few days,” Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, said in a news release. “But 32 states already have an average below or well below $3. Hockley County, Texas, appears to have the lowest county average, at $2.30.”

As of Sunday, AAA says the states with the most expensive average prices for gasoline are:

1. Hawaii ($4.56 per gallon)
2. California ($4.39)
3. Washington ($3.99)
4. Nevada ($3.66)
5. Oregon ($3.53)
6. Alaska ($3.46)
7. Washington, DC ($3.22)
8. Pennsylvania ($3.21)
9. Illinois ($3.20)
10. Arizona ($3.18)

The lowest, meanwhile, were listed as:

1. Oklahoma ($2.52 per gallon)
2. Mississippi ($2.62)
3. Texas ($2.63)
4. Arkansas ($2.63)
5. Kansas ($2.67)
6. Missouri ($2.69)
7. Tennessee ($2.70)
8. Iowa ($2.70)
9. Louisiana ($2.73)
10. Kentucky ($2.74)
