Wish You Were Here
NEPAL: Friends since their kindergarten days, Hayward resident Miriam Schalit and El Cerrito resident Shareen Leland celebrated Shareen’s “big birthday” hiking in Nepal and enjoying local food, including a savory lentil curry known as dal bhat. “Seeing no other people, other than locals on the trail, the timing and weather were perfect,” Miriam says. “Dal Bhat power, 24 hour!”
TRAVEL TIPS: “There are over 1,000 trekking companies in Kathmandu to choose from. While most treks are longer than one week, you can work with a company to create a trek of varying lengths. The guide said this was an easy hike, starting at 8000 feet above sea level and going up to 12,000 feet. We hiked 52 miles in five days!”
