DS Residence

DS Residence is a minimalist home located in Oslo, Norway, designed by Oda Olafsrud of House of Creation. This project involved the comprehensive renovation of a two-story apartment, with a significant reconfiguration of the layout to enhance functionality and maximize natural light. A pivotal element of the redesign was the conversion of the attic space, facilitated through a change-of-use application. Architectural interventions included the addition of dormer windows, a bay window, and the enlargement of existing window openings, ensuring a brighter and more open atmosphere throughout the upper floor. The design approach reflects a seamless blend of Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism, emphasizing simplicity, natural materials, and cohesive functionality.

A central staircase serves as both a practical connector and a unifying architectural feature, linking the two levels in harmony with the overall aesthetic. Careful attention was given to lighting, with a detailed plan crafted to ensure optimal illumination and control across all rooms. This thoughtful approach integrates natural light with strategic artificial lighting, enhancing the apartment’s ambiance. Execution required close collaboration between the contractor, carpenter, and furniture maker to achieve custom design solutions. Clear communication and precision were critical in realizing the project’s vision. The material palette underscores the minimalist ethos, comprising wood, natural stone, concrete, and steel.
