‘Emilia Perez’ sets Golden Globes record with 10 comedy/musical nominations
It’s a good day for “Emilia Perez.”
Netflix’s genre-defying awards contender — the streaming giant’s awards season priority — earned 10 Golden Globes nominations on Monday, the most ever for a film in the comedy/musical category and the second-most in Globes history.
Robert Altman’s classic “Nashville” holds the Golden Globes record for nominations with 11 in the drama category. The previous comedy/musical films with the most nominations were “Cabaret” and “Barbie” with nine.
Written and directed by Jacques Audiard, “Emila Perez” is widely expected to be a major player at the Oscars. The film is a musical hybrid, with drama and action movie elements sprinkled throughout its story about a drug cartel leader who undergoes gender-confirmation surgery and begins to live as her true self.
Golden Globes voters nominated “Emilia Perez” for Best Comedy/Musical, Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Karla Sofia Gascon, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, Best Screenplay and Best Director both for Audiard, Best Song for “El Mal” and “Mi Camino,” Best Score, and Best Film in a Language Other Than English.
Gascon is the first openly trans woman nominated by the Golden Globes. The expectation is that she’ll make similar history next year as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars.
In a statement, Gomez — a double nominee this year for “Emilia Perez” and “Only Murders in the Building” — said, “I am truly grateful and humbled to be nominated for two different projects that mean the world to me. This recognition inspires me and motivates me to work even harder. Couldn’t be prouder of my Emilia Pérez and Only Murders family!”
Songwriters Camille and Clément Ducol added, “We are so happy and honored for our three Golden Globes music nominations in the song and score categories alongside the nominations for our EMILIA PÉREZ collaborators Jacques Audiard, Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoé Saldaña and Selena Gomez. To wake up this morning to listen to the nominations was quite the ritual, and we are forever grateful for this beautiful moment of communion. Congratulations to all the other nominees!”
“Emilia Perez” debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it won a special jury prize and a shared Best Actress award for its four main actresses (Gascon, Saldana, Gomez, and Adrianna Paz). The film later made its way through the fall festival circuit, winning praise and industry fans during several major screenings. The film, which is out on Netflix now, was runner-up for the Toronto International Film Festival audience award. Over the weekend, “Emilia Perez” won several awards at the European Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Actress for Gascon.
