UN Chief says Syrians have Historic Opportunity to build ‘Peaceful Future’
Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has stated that the people of Syria now have a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future.
On Monday, December 9, Guterres shared a message on social media platform X, emphasizing that the future of Syria should be determined by the Syrian people themselves.
He added, “After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of the dictatorial regime, today, the people of Syria can seize this historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future.”
According to him, the United Nations is committed to assisting the Syrians in creating a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity are shared realities for all.
It is worth noting that Syrian rebels have overthrown Bashar al-Assad’s government on the morning of the previous day. Assad, along with his family, has fled to Russia, which has granted them asylum.
The international community will now have to closely monitor the situation to ensure that Syria moves toward peace and stability. The role of external powers, including Russia, in shaping the future of Syria will remain crucial in the coming months.
While the end of Assad’s rule marks a significant shift, it is important to ensure that any future governance structures in Syria promote inclusivity and peace, avoiding the rise of new conflicts.
The global community must support the rebuilding efforts and foster diplomatic solutions to prevent Syria from descending into further instability.
