UN reports 6.6 million people in Afghanistan in need of shelter

0

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that 6.6 million people in Afghanistan are in need of shelter.

On Sunday, December 8th, the organization published a statement revealing that natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes, as well as poverty and unemployment, have significantly increased the number of people requiring shelter.

According to the UNHCR, providing shelter for the needy across Afghanistan is one of the organization’s priorities. To address this, it has requested $21.9 million in aid.

The UNHCR’s data highlights that the October 2022 earthquake in Herat and the recent floods have destroyed over 66,000 homes in Afghanistan.

The statement emphasized that the UNHCR is committed to providing urgent assistance, including long-term shelter solutions, shelter repairs, emergency shelter, and non-food items, to ensure vulnerable families have access to dignified living conditions.

As winter has now begun in Afghanistan, international humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the increasing level of need within the country.

The coming months are expected to pose significant challenges, particularly in providing shelter to those affected by ongoing disasters.
