Match Report: Leyton Orient Academy 1-2 AFC Fylde Academy
AFC Fylde’s Academy made club history by reaching the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup on Monday night with a 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient.
First half goals from Stan Holder and Mason McKay proved the difference at Brisbane Road.
It was a cagey start to the affair in East London with neither side able to really put their foot on the ball.
Faris Mohammed scuffed an effort towards goal as the Coasters grew into the game.
On the half hour mark, the Coasters broke the deadlock through that man again Stan Holder. The skipper stole possession on the half way line before driving forward and firing towards goal. The ball swerved towards goal before sliding past Freddie Norman to open the scoring.
Orient pushed for an equaliser but on the stroke of half time, Fylde doubled their lead. Mason McKay found himself in a dangerous position on the left edge of the box, before the 16-year-old unleashed a venomous strike which flew into the roof of the net to make it two seconds before the half time whistle.
It was a slow start to the second half with Fylde defending strongly, limiting the home side to very few chances.
With 20 minutes left to go, Leyton Orient got themselves back into the game with a sublime finish as Devine Samuel back-heeled the ball from close range to beat Charlie Clark and get the host’s back into the contest.
Moments later, Samuel had the chance to draw Orient level with a header from close range which flew just wide.
It was end to end for the remaining minutes as both sides went close to adding to the scoreline but Fylde soaked up the late pressure brilliantly to reach the fourth round.
